Since I can, I shall bring this to you for your opinions. First, a bit of background. Originally, I'd gone with a subtle nature theme for our nursery. Then, at a community garage sale thing, I found this FABULOUS old lamp with a ship-in-the-ocean black on parchment-colored lampshade and a couple of pretty pictures (which I later framed in matching frames), one of a ship and one of an old-world style map. These went into the nursery. Later, we picked up a "treasure map" and framed that and put it up, too. We also chose a couple of picture frames for pics of us/him that had that "old world/rough" kind of feel to them. The nature stuff is going to stay in the nursery (and a collage of leaves I made that's currently in the office will move into the nursery, as well as a couple of other things), and so we can play up the sea-faring/pirate thing in Will's "new" room. Thus the decoupage the freecycled dresser idea. Another sort of "plain wood" dresser (unalterable, but suitable) will also be in the room, as well as a couple of bookcases with shutter doors on them that sort of fit the mood. Will's bed is neutral. I have a couple of fitting knickknacks to display as well, and might pick up one or two more. I want to go more "ancient seafaring" than "pirate", but pirate inevitably is going to leak in. (Has already in the form of that "treasure map", in fact.) So I'm trying to find the paper to decoupage onto the dresser. It's a large three-drawer. We have to cover the whole thing, aside from the back, pretty much. It's kind of crappy looking, but works just fine, and the drawers are big, which is what mattered. Also, as mentioned, we got it free. Being poor, I don't want to spend TOO much money; I'm hoping to keep it around $25 or so, DEFINITELY no more than $50. Here are what I've found so far:
http://tinyurl.com/6db34r I think this is the best bet for filling in gaps and doing the narrow places around the drawers; I thought I could use strips with the edging out and that would look neat. It's also the cheapest option I've come across by far.
http://tinyurl.com/6qundu This is the sort of thing I really like, but it's a wallpaper border, so it's narrow and the pattern is going to be quite repetitive. Maybe for covering the drawers, but I'm worried it'll be too repetitive. Also, it's rather expensive.
http://tinyurl.com/5uauh4 I actually just found this one, and I really like it, and the price is right! If I'm reading right, it's kind of small, but maybe would work for the top of the dresser with bits of other stuff filling out the space...*goes to measure dresser top* Okay, so the dresser is about 21" deep by 3ft wide, so it would take two of these side by side (again, if I'm reading right) to cover it. Not sure if that would look good or not...Of course, there will be stuff ON the dresser, so it's not like both maps would be completely viewable...I'd still need to fill in around the edges, too.
http://tinyurl.com/5ns3do This looks nice (wish the picture was a bit better) and the pattern only repeats every 20 inches, so that's pretty good. I thought maybe the sides or even the drawers...but I'd have to buy WAY more than I need (note the bit about "priced as single rolls but you have to actually by in sets of two") and the price gets pretty steep. On the other hand, I could use what's left to maybe do something on the wall over his bed (where I'm not comfortable hanging art) or something...still, a lot of money (relatively speaking) for possibly a lot of paper I wouldn't necessarily have a use for...I do really like the more subtle style it appears to have, though. Not sure I'd want to do the WHOLE dresser in it, which is another option, but I could, I suppose.
If anyone finds anything they think would work even better than any of this, DO point me to it! :) I really want your ideas/opinions, 'cause I'm totally unsure here and I don't have decades to debate about it. :P |
