Mother of all I survey.
Just put down Finn. Will's been asleep for twenty minutes or so. Finn'll wake up in a minute, but for a few seconds, I got to pat myself on the back. :)

Will had a rough day at school; he was throwing things and didn't listen and ended up in time out. I honestly think it was lack of sleep; he was up early and had a bad dream last night. Still, I'll do plenty of reminding to not throw things before school next week. He made a ladybug...it's something less than a complete success, to be honest, but he WAS having a rough day.

Maybe a voice post later if I can get all the stars to line up correctly. Meantime, I better go work on Finn some more.

About an hour later, and I'm back, with Finn finally down. He took so long because he pooped and I missed it. Phoo.
Watched Oprah on saving money...I already do/have done most of the stuff talked about. *sigh*
I am thinking about creative ways to get rid of all our excess stuff, so how about some opinions from you on these?

First idea: Auction it off locally instead of a garage sale. Reasoning: People have a different mindset at auctions than at garage sales. Going through and sorting the stuff is something we don't really have time for or, frankly, ability to do. This assumes the auctioneers will take care of that for us, which I have to research.

Second idea: Make a post on Craigslist and/or a webpage with a general list of what all we have. Let people make offers, cash as well as barter. I could put a list of things we want/need up as well. Offhand, we need some electrical work done in the house. We also would like to turn out kitchen window into a back door, which would also require lengthening the deck to meet the new door. I will eventually need clothes (5T and up) for the boys. We could also take things we know we'll use and will keep, like toilet paper, water, etc. And then there's everything on our Amazon wishlists, all of which is "want", but hey. Biggest problem with this idea is that I really can't make a detailed list of everything we have and want to get rid of.

Well, I guess I only have two ideas, besides the usual "yet another garage sale" idea. I was going to Ebay some stuff, but I don't have time or the will and it doesn't seem worth it, really.

Here's what I know we have to get rid of off the top of my head: couch and love seat (old, sofa in bad shape on one end), an ancient console TV, a more recent TV (I think, unless we already got rid of it), a smaller black and grey entertainment center, tons of clothes, mostly women's plus, mostly in good to very good condition, some men's large/medium, some used shoes, a lot of knick-knacks and decor, some toys, a few bits of jewelry, lots of this and that, bits and bobs. Oh, and probably some art and some (mostly not in good shape) bedding.

I can't bring myself to just let it all go...ultimately, there's hundreds, maybe even thousands, of dollars worth of stuff down there. I feel like I need to get SOMETHING for it all, you know? Especially considering how desperately in need of cash we are.

Ooh, what size women's clothes? :-D And knicknacks and decor? I'd be willing to pay for the stuff (assuming I have enough money lol) and for shipping if it's shippable. :-D

I vote for Craigslist. I sell on there often, it works out well. Mason is currently on the warpath (he's tired and refuses to nap) but I will come back later and give you a few Craigslist ideas and tell you my experiences (none bad). :)

Okay, I do have a second, I have pacified the boy. :)

I used to do eBay all the time and loved it. Now they've changed all their policies and there is a LOT of scams and stuff now so I just stay away from it. I do miss it sometimes though.

The rest of this is about CL and I don't know if you've ever sold on there so I'm posting as if you haven't. :)

I've never had a problem with the Craigslist stuff. Except people not showing up when they're supposed to (and you never hear from them again). But I haven't had too many of those. Anyway, Jack handles any phone calls or pick ups/meetings. I feel a person out a bit first before deciding if I'm going to let them come to my house to pick up - though, I have had lots and lots of pick ups both from CL and freecycle. I always do pick ups when Jack is home. I generally sell baby items so I typically get Mom's of young children and all that. :) To cut down on no-shows I generally disclose the closest cross streets so that people know approximately how far they'll have to drive. You can put your phone number in the ad or people can email you privately through CL if you prefer it that way (that's generally how I do it).

Based on my CL here, I get the best responses when I price competitively (and disclose any imperfections in the ad). I don't mean to sell for pennies or anything but if you just make it say, $5 less than someone else selling something similar-people will buy yours often to save that $5. Also take good pictures. CL allows for 4 pictures per ad. And be ready for people to try and haggle you down lol. I always list my stuff for about $5-$10 higher than I want to get out of it. Sometimes I get what I'm asking, sometimes a little less and some people will email and offer you a ridiculously low amount-or even better, ask you to give it to them. I get that a LOT. I just delete them, I can't afford to give it away, we always need money too.

If you have baby items those sell on my CL like CRAZY!!! Furniture does too. The only clothes I've sold is baby clothes so I can't say about others (I don't have enough clothes of my own to sell lol).

I've seen people leave up barter messages too. Our CL has a barter section, even. I've never tried doing that so I don't know how affective it is or isn't.

I think that's it. If you have any questions at all, feel free to ask. :) I've made good money on Craigslist and as long as you practice safety. I have never had a problem with it (and I used to live pretty near a not-safe area) but I figure why leave myself open to tempt fate? I just arrange pick ups when Jack is home or we meet them at the corner gas station.

Good luck-hope you make lots! :)

Thanks for all the info! I freecycle, so I know about the safety stuff, but it's always good to hear anyway. :) I tried Craigslist for our sofa (not the one I mention here, the other, good, one, that we sold finally a few weeks ago) and only got a couple of inquiries that didn't pan out, but I was thinking a big "all sorts of stuff" add might get some attention from browsers.
Baby items sell like crazy everywhere. *grin*

To answer your first comment, the women's clothes are mostly 26/28, with a few 24 and 30. As for knickknacks and decor, I'd have to look. Anything in particular you like that I can see if I have? :)

Thanks!

You're very welcome! I just finished loading a few things to CL in fact. :) Yeah, I know I read all the big stuff offerings! I've had better luck though with separate entries, not sure why lol. And you'd be surprised how much of a difference dropping a price $5 will do! I was surprised myself. A couple of weeks ago we listed several things and got only a trickle. I dropped each thing down $5 and sold it all within 2 days. Crazy! :)

Hmm, I'd definitely need 26/28 +. Particularly shirts. I have a hard time finding pants because I has a big booty. :) Do you happen to have a winter coat in that size? I have one but my friend needs a winter coat and 26/28 would be perfect.

Knickknacks and decor...well, my bathroom is a blank slate. :-D My front bath was too until we came across a TON of apple stuff for the kitchen so I just used it for my bathroom and love it. So far hanging in my bathroom is one picture of a plant lol. I'm really not TOO particular. My living room is a hodgepodge of stuff lol. My kitchen is Tuscan/grap themed, bedroom is Asian and that's pretty much it. I don't necessarily NEED anything but I love home decor. My tastes tend to be either modern or more country. Leave it to me to be completely different, eh? ;)

I probably have a coat, and I have lots of shirts. I'll look through the stuff and pick out some of the best and take pics for you...definitely not this weekend 'cause we're really busy, maybe next weekend. (Can't do it during the week 'cause I can't go downstairs with the boys.) :)

That's just fine, I don't have a lot of cash at the moment anyway. :) In a week or so it should be better. Thanks!

Problem is that there's no easy way to get rid of it. I mean, you could have Salvation Army pick it all up and use it as a tax deduction, but that doesn't help with your cash-now needs. Probably Craigslist the best of it, garage sale the stuff that doesn't go on Craigslist and the middling stuff, and what doesn't go at either/worst condition stuff donate.

Unfortunately, all this does require itemizing, so, no matter how you look at it, it's going to take some work.

Yeah, I think that I'm in the process of accepting that I'm going to have to do a fair bit of sorting. Soon.
